Splitting Bills with Travel Companions

Split a shared expense evenly or by custom amounts and keep track of who owes what.

  1. 1

    Add companions to a trip

Invite the people you're traveling with to a shared trip, or just add their names to split expenses without requiring them to have an account.

  2. 2

    Log a shared expense

When adding an expense, open the split panel and choose who it applies to, everyone, just a few people, or a custom uneven split.

  3. 3

    Choose a split method

Split evenly, by percentage, or by exact amounts per person, whichever matches how you actually divided the cost.

  4. 4

    See the running balance

DollarBuddy keeps a running tally of who owes whom across the whole trip, so you can settle up once at the end instead of after every meal.

Tip

You do not need everyone on the trip to install anything. Companions can exist as names only, which is usually what you want for the one friend who will not download another app.

Common questions

Do the people I am travelling with need the app?

No. You can add companions as names alone and still split expenses against them. Inviting them to a shared trip is an option, not a requirement.

Can I split a bill unevenly?

Yes. Split evenly, by percentage, or by exact amounts per person, whichever matches how the cost was actually divided.

How do I see who owes what?

A running balance across the whole trip, not per receipt. It nets everything off as you go, so at any point you can see one figure per person.

When should we settle up?

Once, at the end. That is the point of the running balance: nobody is transferring small amounts after every meal, and the end-of-trip maths is already done.
