Currency Conversion, Explained
How DollarBuddy converts every expense to your home currency using live, date-locked exchange rates.
- 1
Live exchange rates
DollarBuddy pulls current market exchange rates so a conversion done today reflects today's rate, not a stale or averaged figure.
- 2
Rates lock to the expense date
Once an expense is logged, its conversion rate is locked to that day. If rates shift tomorrow, yesterday's coffee doesn't silently change price in your reports.
- 3
Multi-currency trips
Spending across several countries on one trip? Log each expense in its local currency. DollarBuddy converts each one independently and rolls everything up into a single home-currency total.
- 4
Manual conversion tool
Need a quick one-off conversion outside of logging an expense? Use the built-in currency converter from the tools menu for any currency pair.
Tip
Live, date-locked conversion is a Premium feature. Free accounts convert at time of entry without historical rate locking.
Common questions
If exchange rates move, does an old expense change value?
No. Each expense locks to the rate on the day it was logged. Yesterday's coffee stays the price it was, so a trip total does not drift underneath you while you are still travelling.
Can one trip cover several currencies?
Yes, and this is the case it is built for. Log each expense in the local currency of wherever you are. Each is converted on its own, and everything rolls up into one home-currency total for the trip.
Is currency conversion free?
Free accounts convert at the time you enter an expense. Live, date-locked conversion, which is what keeps historical reports accurate, is part of Premium.
Is there a converter I can use on its own?
Yes. The tools menu has a standalone converter for any currency pair, for when you just want to know what a price means before you decide to pay it.
